What is a Cortado? - Why it's My Pre Flight Ritual
It’s 4:12am. My suitcase is zipped. Uniform’s pressed. The sky outside is still navy. Before the airport chaos begins, I have one thing that's non-negotiable: my morning cortado.
There’s something sacred about those quiet minutes before the day takes off, no queues, no delays, just the sound of the espresso machine and the rich aroma of Jumbo Jet Espresso filling my kitchen. It’s my little ritual. A grounding moment before I spend 12 hours on a 4 sector day!
What Is a Cortado?
A cortado is a simple Spanish-style coffee made with equal parts espresso and steamed milk. No foam, no fancy syrup, just 50/50 balance. The milk “cuts” the intensity of the espresso without drowning it, creating a smooth, bold little cup that’s over far too soon.
It’s not a drink to chug while replying to emails. It’s one to sip with intention. And at 4am, it’s exactly what I need to wake up without feeling wired.
Why It Works Before a Flight
As crew, I have to be alert but calm. The cortado delivers that in spades, enough caffeine to spark focus, without the heaviness of a latte or the jolt of a black americano. It’s also quick to make, which matters when you’re due at the crew room in an hour!
Whether you’re flying the plane, working the cabin, or just heading on holiday, a cortado is the perfect pre-departure drink. It’s efficient, delicious, and just indulgent enough to make your morning feel special.
My Go-To Jet Bean Cortado Recipe
Ingredients:
- 18–20g Jet Bean Jumbo Jet Espresso
- 60ml water for brewing
- 60ml whole milk (or oat milk)
Tools:
- Espresso machine or moka pot
- Milk steamer or saucepan & whisk
- Small glass or cup
Instructions:
- Pull a double shot of Jumbo Jet Espresso. It’s got just the right punch - bold, chocolatey, and smooth enough to drink short.
- Steam your milk until it’s hot but not frothy. You’re aiming for a glossy, latte-like texture, not cappuccino foam.
- Combine in your glass at a 1:1 ratio. That’s where the magic happens, creamy and rich, with no bitterness.
- Take a moment sit down, even if it only lasts a couple of sips. Enjoy the moment before the long day ahead.
The Jet Bean Difference
Jumbo Jet Espresso was made for drinks like the cortado - short, sharp, and balanced. It’s the blend I rely on when I need to feel a little more human before heading into the sky.
If you’re like me and your day starts in the dark with a suitcase by the door, try making a cortado part of your take-off routine. Trust me, it beats airport coffee every time!
See you in the sky,
